Description
Rare 1914-1916 - World War One - vintage Military Map of Eastern EuropeGerman Army operational map of Pinsk, Belarus and Ukraine area
These are very rare, only available in a few archives. Fabricated with thick paper, for field use, not the tissue-like paper sometimes you see on old maps designed for less rigorous usage. The type of paper has not been commonly used. Stored in a box for a century, they are still in very good condition. These can be unfolded easily and enjoyed, with a modicum of care of course.
For the military buff, you probably already know how these maps were used in the field - t
he sheet would have been overlayed using a 'trace' (sheet of acetate type material) with military boundaries, routes / axis and objectives marked on it.
"Operationskarte" ->
Operation chart - for military use
"...Bearbeitet in den geographisches Abteilung den Kgl. Preuß. landesaufnahme" ->
Prepared in the geographical department of country survey of the Prussian King.
"Nur für den dienstgebrauch" -
for official use only (nowadays they might say "classified").
"Im Gradnetz der Landesaufnahme liegt Greenwich 17 degrees 39 minutes 59 seconds östlich von Ferro" ->
I
n the graticule of the state survey,
Greenwich is 17 degrees 39 minutes 59 seconds east of Ferro (refers to Ferro, one of the Canary Islands, now n=-know as "
El Hierro
").
Kijew - Kiev
Wilna - Vilnius
Wien - Vienna
Lemberg - Lviv (Ukrainian),
Lwów (Polish),
Lvov (Russian)
Selling many more of these - see "seller's other items" - all Eastern Europe, from St. Petersburg in the north, through Serbia, to Odessa on the Black Sea.
A fine and historical collection.
